Everything You Need To Know About Moles In Your Yard
What Are Moles?
Moles are small burrowing insectivores found all over North America, Europe, and Asia. They’re small, ranging between 4 and 11 inches long and usually weighing up to 8 oz. Nearly blind but with an exceptional sense of smell, moles spend their lives underground where they eat a diet made up of earthworms, grubs, and other immature insects. Moles can be identified by their characteristic large, powerful front feet, greyish-brown fur, and long, thin snouts.
Mole Tunnels In Your Yard
Contrary to popular belief, moles do not eat plant roots. However, their burrowing activity can cause damage to roots, particularly in flower beds and lawns. When moles burrow in your yard, their tunnels can leave visible trails and when moles operate close to the surface, it can cause damage to grass’ roots, leaving behind unsightly brown patches. Mole activity can also create holes in your lawn and their tunnels can easily cave in when stepped on, which can lead to injury.
Signs of Moles in Yard
Moles leave behind unmistakable signs of activity. Signs of moles in your yard include:
- Raised ridges crisscrossing your yard.
- Areas of discolored or dead grass that follow a specific path.
- Raised mounds of dirt. These are usually the entrance/exit to mole tunnels.
- Areas of your lawn feeling “squishy” or like the soil is very loose.
How To Get Rid Of Moles
As moles live underground, they can be difficult to prevent. Most states do not require a permit to trap moles. It requires patience and some trial and error but, long term, can be an effective solution. Mole baits can be similarly effective at reducing mole populations. Mole activity is at its highest in the spring so deploying baits and traps is most effective around that time of year.
